Mars Volta

Intertiatic ESP

So from the remains of At the Drive-in come the Mars Volta, much like the overused phoenix simile. If this track is really representative of their album, we’ve really got something special in these boys; Intertiatic ESP is as progressive as its title, twice as interesting and not half as original… jumpy structures with layers of effects under a surprisingly catchy chorus should bring M.V. the fans their haircuts deserve. 8.0

Chicks on Speed

we don’t play guitars

This is music for anyone who reads Dazed and Confused like the bible, and for those who only like the internet because of Popbitch. If this is you, you probably liked Republica and Shampoo too, god save us. If this single breaks the charts it’ll see the attack of the electroclash movement that’s been threatening, but so far only really been publically flirted with by the likes of Peaches (who features here). Singer Kiki Moose screams like she’s been hanging around japan listening to the bitchy punk too long, but the whole thing doesn’t really come across too well with her posh London accent. 7.2

Kelis

Milkshake

Although there’s usually a far amount of respect for Ms.Kelis releasing fairly gutsy stuff, her new style, produced and written by the ubiquitous Neptunes, sounds more like another one of the “100% effort by Pharrell Williams, vocals by…” tracks which have been haunting the charts recently, and as it sounds like Williams has done this one in his sleep, it’ll probably slip under the radar unless it has a fairly decent video to back it up. It’s obviously supposed to be a kind of sexy electronica, but it just ends up sounding slack. 5.8

British Sea Power

Remember Me

With quotes like ‘the best band in britain’ and even ‘out of this world’, BSP have got a lot to live up to. Having toured around the country for years, this live favourite is being released presumably to unite the fans and bring this gloomy affair out from the shadows. If Jarvis Cocker had a lovechild with the Clash it might sound like this. Shows Promise. B- 7.7
