BLU CANTRELL FT SEAN PAUL

Breathe

(Arista)

So, Sean Paul is at number one this week with Breathe is he? No you've all been fooled. It's a Blu Cantrell song??? Well, it seems that Sean Paul simply had to many good tracks to squeeze this one on his album, leaving Blue Cantrel to bathe in the success of it all. On a more positive side, this is clearly is better than her previous, 'hit 'em up style'. Her man bashing undertones, similar to the likes of all annoying label whore Pink and her British counterpart, Ms Dynamite-te-hee are still prominent in her lyrics, but I'm not going to beat her down that path because I adore this song. Blue Cantrell's voice does for me what the Fish Food flavour of Ben and Jerry's ice cream appears to do for women with PMS. It's just a shame she doesn't appear to eat it. Sean Paul's dancehall style vocals work well next to her sweet voice, as he attempts to reconcile their make-believe relationship far more effectively than LL cool J ever did with that man-muncher J Lo. I just couldn't take all that "…don't make decisions when your mad" ranter seriously. As a come back, blaming the woman is a tried and tested method, and nobody does it better than Sean Paul. This single is good, but watch out for Paul's 'Like Glue' which is better still, and released on the 25th; Best Believe!

D KAY & EPSILON feat STAMINA MC

Barcelona

(Bad Company Authorised)

Drum n Bass enjoyed a few successful chart entries last year with a string of hits that were pussied up just enough for even the most happy handbag house lover to appreciate; but the tunes were good. The key to such success was to take a DnB beat, and add RnB vocals, a formula that had proved so successful a couple of years before to the beats of UK Garage. Working on DJ Marky's 'it's the way' gave Stamina MC the opportunity to exercise his vocal chords just enough to catch the attention of producers D. Kay & Epsilon. Their latest offering being 'Barcelona' on which Stamina reminisces about the Czech city of Prague. This is nothing new, in fact it sounds like DJ Marky all over again, but despite this the melody has been thought out well. It's a voice which sounds good enough but it is in melody writing where Stamina MC excells, leaving us wanting to hear it again and again. We just hope Stamina MC can keep it up long enough, and not spurt out his entire wad of catchy vocals all at once, thus leaving a sour taste in each and everyone our mouths…ok Ill stop here……..Oh Cum on!

Pharell Williams

Frontin'

(Arista)

Pharell Williams must be the busiest boy on the planet. Somewhere between writing all the urban tracks in all the charts and playing a major role in N*E*R*D he's given us a taste of his solo material too in the form of 'Frontin'. The tune features the current boyfriend of one of his old flames Beyonce…That would be Jay Z then. Lucky bastads, but you can't help thinking that sexy B must have got in the middle of things by now…(I'll leave you to ponder upon that one). But whatever's going on, there's no doubting that the two work well together. 'Frontin' is a relaxed, wacko Jacko style tune with wonderful harmonies which sound more like a synth has sung them than the creamy falsetto voice of Pharrell. Is the song any good? Well, its cleaver, it sounds fresh, which I guess is what Pharrell is all about, but personally I think the melody is a bit dull and we've seen far better production work by him than this. I think his melody on 'Beautiful'; a duet with Snoop Dog satisfied my ear buds far more, with its funky beat dancing everyone's feet down to STA to buy their ticket to Brazil. It was the tune- not the women in the video!
